October is a month that is synonymous with Halloween. Which usually contains creepy stuff. Netflix also celebrated the moment. By releasing a number of original films with horror and thriller ingredients. Starting from Hubie Halloween, Rebecca, to His House. Which closed last Friday (30/10).

Prior to its release by Netflix, this His House film, in fact, had premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. On January 27, 2020 ago. Which then received a very positive response from critics. And touted as one of the best films of the year.

The premise raised by the film His House is, in truth, very simple. Namely, about the haunted house. Which is inhabited by a young black husband and wife: Bol (Sope Dirisu) and Rial (Wunmi Mosaku).

The story is that Bol and Rial were refugees from South Sudan who was being hit by war. Together with a number of other refugees, they fled their homeland in Africa and sought asylum in Britain.

However, unfortunate was irresistible. While crossing the ocean, the small boat they were riding in sank under the big waves. Bol and Rial did survive, but not their only daughter. The one named Nyagak (Malaika Abigaba). Whose death was a tragedy that is hard to forget.

Bol and Rial then got a house in a simple housing complex. Its located on the outskirts of London City. The conditions are quite dilapidated and less livable. However, they happily occupied it. Neither protested nor complained.

Bol and Rial have to obey and show a good attitude. So that they can be accepted as citizens of the UK. So that they are not deported and returned to their country of origin. Which was ravaged by the civil war between these tribes.

At first, life in the new house went smoothly. Until, then, one day, strange things started to happen. Bol and Rial often feel supernatural terror in the house. In fact, they are often haunted by the shadow of their dead child.

Bol then applied to move house. However, the reason for the ghost was considered far-fetched by the British government. His request was rejected. Moreover, finding new habitable places for refugees is not easy.

Bol and Rial have no other choice either. They also had absolutely no acquaintance to turn to in England. The young couple, in the end, had to face the supernatural terror alone that emerged from behind the walls of the house. Who always threatens them.

Btw, His House is, in fact, the debut film of director Remi Weekes. However, the not-yet-well-known filmmaker is quite adept at presenting a jump-scare that is not exaggerated. Which is supported by a well-laid out sound effect.

Apart from that, Weekes is also able to present an imaginative supernatural figure who is quite intimidating in this 90-minute film. Which would make the audience shudder with his sharp eyes from the darkness.

However, for horrormania who expects a scary haunted house film, such as Sinister (2012) or The Conjuring (2013), get ready to be disappointed. Because of His House, actually, it's not that scary. It's more exciting to watch Manchester United played by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The ups and downs. Hehe..

His House is indeed different. The haunted house shown is not the same as supernatural horror films in general. Which is usually gothic, old-fashioned, gloomy, or vintage. The outward appearance already gave the goosebumps.

In the film that she wrote herself on, Remi Weekes presents an ordinary house. Its quite modern, although the conditions are messy. Its located in a residential complex on the outskirts of the city. Which is far from being haunted.

Apparently, Weekes didn't want to scare the audience with the scary house visualization. He emphasized the psychological side more to show tense scenes. Which is presented through traumatic events experienced by the two main characters.

The back and forth storyline, which features many flashback scenes, allows the audience to understand and share the bitterness experienced by the characters Bol and Rial. Which is played nicely by the two main players. The unknown.

Therefore, it would be more appropriate for His House to be called a psychological thriller film. Whose story is very dramatic. And emotional. Wrapped by an unexpected plot twist. A very touching and ruffled feeling. Which is a pity to miss.
