Launched in early 2009 by its pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin is the largest cryptocurrency measured by market capitalization and amount of data stored on its blockchain. The Bitcoin software is free and available online to anyone who wants to run a Bitcoin node and store their own copy of the Bitcoin blockchain. As Bitcoin matures, engineers have designed additional protocols to improve the speed and privacy of Bitcoin transactions, including the Omni Layer, Lightning Network and Liquid Network. Only approximately 21 million bitcoins will ever be created. New coins are minted every 10 minutes by bitcoin miners who help to maintain the network by adding new transaction data to the blockchain.

How much is Bitcoin worth today? The average price of one bitcoin was approximately 19,000 U.S. dollars in December 2020. Bitcoin’s highest price
The virtual currency has had a volatile trading history since its creation in 2009. The first price hike occurred during 2013 when one bitcoin was trading at around 1,124 U.S. dollars in November. Four years later, bitcoin experienced a meteoric rise and reached record highs, with some exchanges having the price of a single bitcoin at approximately 20,000 U.S. dollars in late 2017. However, prices soon started to tumble in the months that followed. In the third quarter of 2020, there were around 18.5 million bitcoins in circulation worldwide, and the market capitalization of Bitcoin was approximately 200 billion U.S. dollars.
