Utilization of Technology as a Learning Facility during the Covid-19 Pandemic

The Covid-19 outbreak is currently sweeping the world, including Indonesia, which is currently establishing a Large-Scale Social Restriction (PSBB) policy. The existence of this policy has an impact on all sectors of life, such as the economy, health, social and education. In the field of education, the government through the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) seeks to ensure that education actors continue to carry out the learning process even though in a different way, namely Study From Home (SFH) (Putro et al, 2020: 126).

The Ministry of Education and Culture encourages the implementation of the teaching and learning process to be carried out online. This is in accordance with the Circular of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Number 3 of 2020 concerning the prevention of Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) in the Education Unit, and the Letter of the Secretary General of the Minister of Education and Culture Number 35492 / A.A5 / HK / 2020 dated March 12, 2020 regarding the Prevention of the Spread of Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) (Astini, 2020: 243). The implementation of online learning cannot be separated from the use of technology as a learning tool during a pandemic. Teachers and students learn together and at the same time using various applications, such as WhatsApp, telegram, zoom meetings, google meet, google classroom, quipper school, teacher room, and other applications that can be accessed via cellphones or computers.

Facts in society today, some parents of students do not have cellphones or computers to support online learning. This condition makes them confused in facing the reality. One side is faced with a lack of supporting facilities, on the other hand there is a demand for the fulfillment of educational services for students. Another problem is the unpreparedness of teachers and students for online learning. The shift of conventional learning systems to online systems suddenly without proper preparation has caused a number of teachers to be unable to keep up with changes with information and technology-based learning. Even though the teacher must use technology to support their learning. Based on these,

THEORETICAL STUDY

Utilization of Educational Technology during the Covid-19 Pandemic

In the Big Indonesian Dictionary, educational technology is a systemic method for planning, using, and assessing all teaching and learning activities by paying attention to both technical and human resources and the interaction between the two, so as to get a more effective form of education. The use of educational technology includes: 1) educational technology as a means of supporting knowledge design, 2) educational technology as a means of information to find out knowledge that supports students, 3) educational technology as a medium in facilitating students in arguing, 4) educational technology able to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the learning process, 5) educational technology as a tool to achieve educational goals (Salsabila 2020: 193).

Learning Facilities and Infrastructure

Learning facilities are all tools and equipment that are directly used in the educational process that facilitates teaching and learning in schools (Osahon, 2001). Meanwhile, learning infrastructure is all components that indirectly support the education process in schools (Aunurrahman, 2010). Learning facilities and infrastructure are identified as the main factors that contribute to academic achievement in the school system (Jannah and Sontani, 2018: 65-66). Several components of school facilities and infrastructure that need to be considered are: 1) The school has its own building or not, 2) The school uses the building with other schools or not, 3) The space needed is sufficient, moderate, or lacking, 4) Education takes place in the morning, afternoon , or night, 5) Water and lighting is sufficient or not available,

DISCUSSION

The current implementation of online learning presents many obstacles. The obstacle is the uneven internet network access. This is evidenced by Jamalul Izza, as the general chairman of the Indonesian Internet Service Provider Association (APJII), who explained that Indonesia has around 74 thousand villages, of which there are still many villages that cannot enjoy internet networks like other areas. This is motivated by the geographical location of Indonesia which consists of thousands of islands.

The Covid-19 outbreak forces various aspects to make adjustments to new conditions and situations. In the sphere of education, both educators and students are required to be able to operate the online learning system properly. HR readiness is the most important part of achieving online learning success. This readiness is related to the ability of educators and students to use and process various technological systems that are used in online learning.

Barriers to online learning also come from students, where the enthusiasm for learning of students during the online learning process decreases compared to when learning face to face. The effectiveness of learning time also affects the learning motivation of students. Students find it difficult to determine the time to study at home. The family social environment that is less conducive causes students to be unable to focus on learning.

Some solutions that can be applied in minimizing obstacles to online learning, including for teachers, are: a) teachers should prepare learning materials as attractive as possible, such as presenting material in PowerPoint slides accompanied by learning videos so that the material is more alive and felt by students; b) in terms of limited mastery of IT, teachers can use technology with simpler operations, such as the WhatsApp application. However, teachers must also improve their IT competencies by attending workshops or asking other teachers who have more abilities in the IT field (Puspitasari in Kemdikbud, 2020); c) students who "don't care" about taking online learning, can be overcome by proactively contacting (via telephone / video call) students and their parents personally,

For students who do not have the device or take turns using it with their parents or who do not have internet network access, they can do tasks manually, most importantly, still studying and at home. Students who experience internet connection problems can be overcome by thethering to other family members or saving by connecting when needed. Students can also take part in educational programs via television broadcasts organized by the Ministry of Education and Culture in collaboration with TVRI in order to facilitate education during the Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia.

The solution to the problem of the parent factor is communicating with parents to spend time immediately returning home from work so that their children can immediately use their cellphones to learn online. The teacher gives leeway when doing assignments so that students who take turns with their parents can be served. Parents can ask the homeroom teacher for help to inform the learning progress of students through WhatsApp group so that parents are expected to be able to motivate and assist their children who pay less attention to assignments.

CONCLUSION

The Covid-19 epidemic during 2020 has forced the implementation of learning that is usually carried out in schools to be changed to learning from home or other terms online learning (online). The implementation of online learning cannot be separated from the role of technology as a means and infrastructure that helps learning.

The use of educational technology includes: 1) educational technology as a means of supporting knowledge design, 2) educational technology as a means of information to find out knowledge that supports students, 3) educational technology as a medium in facilitating students in arguing, 4) educational technology able to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the learning process, 5) educational technology as a tool to achieve educational goals.

Even though there are still many deficiencies in the availability of technology, quotas and networks as well as teacher delivery methods, they can be overcome with several solutions such as: a) teachers should prepare learning materials as attractive as possible, such as presenting material in PowerPoint slides accompanied by learning videos so that the material is more alive and felt by students; b) in terms of limited mastery of IT, teachers can use technology with simpler operations, such as the WhatsApp application. c) students who "don't care" about taking online learning, can be overcome by proactively contacting (via telephone / video call) students and their parents personally or by conducting a home visit.
