Designing for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) - The Guided Approach

Products designed using DFMA principles are extremely reliable than those that are developed through the traditional design approach. DFMA ensures a seamless, smooth and quick transition from design phase to production phase too

Advantages of using DFMA

One of the major advantages of using DFMA is the lower assembly cost and short assembly period. Also the time to market time is short enough. DFMA can help you lower assembly costs by using fewer parts and eliminating the ones which are not as important, thus decreasing the labour effort too. With standard assembly practices including vertical assembly and self-aligning parts, the approach lessens assembly time involved too.

Steps to take for Efficient Manufacture and Assembly

 

  • Minimize Part Count

 

The final price of a product is proportional to number of parts and hence reduction in number of parts product quality and reliability typically increase. With fewer parts to worry about, there are reduced chances of misalignment.

One should ask whether the part can move relative to other part while performing its function, whether the part can be made of different material than the others and also whether it should be a separate component.

If the answer is "NO", then the possibility of combining the part with others should be taken into consideration.

 

  • Make all Parts Multi-Functional

 

Multi-functional parts deliver several functions in one part which in turns reduces complexity drastically.

 

  • Reduce The Number of Screws and its Types

 

Using less fasteners reduces assembly weight, the overall cost, and even its complexity. One should rather incorporate self-aligning features in the design. If fasteners are important to the design, then using a common size will help.

 

  • Facilitate Better Parts Handling

 

Parts should always be designed with efficient handling in mind. They should minimize the overall potential for getting stuck together. Also it does not require special fixtures for assembly. The parts should be easily identifiable too especially for speeds handling. Use asymmetric features when specific orientation will be in force for correct alignment.

 

  • Use Standard Parts and Hardware

 

Use standard parts as part of the design so that it reduces the number of varied tools required for the overall assembly and reduce its costs. It is better to never design a part that can be derived from a catalog. One can use various resources like preferred parts lists, vendor catalogs and the like too.

 

  • Encourage Modular Assembly

 

Modular designs help in simplifying assembly operations and identifying the problems becomes quite easy in the end. It also eases the inventory process and boosts maintenance and serviceability. The overall repair time is reduced in this context too.
