What Is ITIL And Why Should I Be Interested?

ITIL is an acronym for Information Technology Infrastructure Library. ITIL is a body of knowledge that was developed so that managers and personnel in IT operations and development have a reference for checklists, established practices, tasks and procedures. It exists so that any IT organization can tailor their own internal guidelines, operational standards and best practices. IT Infrastructure Library is found in a series of published books, with each tome representing a particular IT management subject matter.

ITIL originated in the United Kingdom. The government agencies were growing increasingly reliant on Information Technology for their operations in the 1980s, as were private contractors and services. Realizing the inefficiency of everyone coming up with their own myriad operations and procedures, the UK Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency set out to create a standard for everyone to draw on and to customize. The initial publications of the ITIL ranged throughout the 1990s, reaching to more than 30 volumes.

Over the first decade of the new millennium, a second version of ITIL was formulated and released. In order to make the body of knowledge simpler (and cheaper), the number of books was reduced from over 30 to an intended 8. However, a ninth volume was added with supplemental information. The first two books go together to represent IT Service Management, with one book dedicated to Service Support and the other to Service Delivery. Further operational guidance is given through the next five books covering Application Management, ICT Infrastructure Management, Security Management, Software Asset Management and The Business Perspective. The eighth book, Planning to Implement Service Management, covers the topic of actually putting into place the ideas described in the first seven books. Additionally, as IT units are found in smaller and smaller businesses and organizations, a ninth volume titled ITIL Small-Scale Implementation was added focusing on smaller scale implementation of the various practices.

The second version of ITIL is slated to cycle out effective June 30, 2011. ITIL v3.0, initially published in 2007, spreads across a smaller and more accessible five volumes. The titles of the texts are ITIL Service Strategy, ITIL Service Design, ITIL Service Transition, ITIL Service Operation and ITIL Continual Service Improvement. ITIL has a large amount of support within the IT field, although there are alternative systems like Microsoft Operations Framework. Occasionally, criticism is leveled that government should publish ITIL as free knowledge since noncommercial organizations might not find the price tag affordable.

As ITIL v2.0 is phased out, bridge examinations are available for individuals wishing to transfer their certifications to v3.0. Four levels of certification exist - Foundation, Intermediate, Expert and Master. Passing an exam for ITIL certification yields a certificate to those with sufficient knowledge and also a metal lapel pin to display on shirts and jackets. These pins are gold in color and diamond in shape, representing the ITIL logo, with the four corners specifically symbolizing Infrastructure Management, IT Management, service support and service delivery. While there is no ITIL formal membership, local chapters of certified individuals are known to exist in multiple countries.
