When you are working online it is really important to get going and then to test what you are doing. Split testing is one of the best internet marketing strategies you can use to be sure you are making the most out of your efforts. You can apply the principles of split testing to just about any aspect of your internet business, and what you learn from the test will help you to improve your business one step at a time.
There is no one best way to do anything. If anyone ever tells you that there is a specific formula that works 100% of the time, well...they either are not thinking it through or they just don't know what they are talking about.
There are starting points...there has to be or nobody would ever get started...and it is fine to follow the advice of experts on where to start. But...and this is a big but...you are going to want to test, tweak and modify from that starting point if you want to maximize your potential.
Hey, if you are happy with the results you get and don't want more money or more subscribers or more sales...whatever you are trying to do...then by all means skip the testing. However, if you want your business to grow...and in my opinion, if you aren't growing your business you are probably shrinking it...then you are going to want to do some serious split testing.
Let's take one-time-offers, or OTOs as an example. Say you are selling an eBook through your site and you want to provide an upsell or OTO after the customer buys the first eBook because you have heard if you don't you are "leaving money on the table." That's fine, great concept.
So maybe you write down two different ideas for your OTO. So cool, now you have the ability to do a standard A-B test...you will be checking to see if OTO #1 does better than #2 or vice versa.
There is no pat answer that it is always better to go with a lower priced OTO or higher priced OTO...every situation is different. It is going to be influenced by your niche, your products, and your customers. So be of the mindset that you will always be testing...don't let it scare you.
When you are split testing, you have to do it in "real time"...by that I mean you can't test idea #1 on Monday and idea #2 on Tuesday. That would not be a valid test. You have to be able to rotate whatever you are testing one right after the other.
Test your two ideas. Give them time so you have some really good data. Use a good software program to help with the test and help analyze the data...and a good program really needs to be flexible enough you can use it anywhere along the sales process. You might be testing headlines on your squeeze page instead of the OTO...see, very different places in the process!
Once you have your data you can then select the better performing OTO and now you move on to your next test. It might be a 3rd OTO option, or maybe it is something within the sales copy for the winning OTO...or maybe you are going to test something else entirely.
By using the internet marketing strategies about split testing, you will be continually improving your process. This will let you build your business and your revenues so you are making the most out of your time and efforts.
