Difference Between Fluorescent And LED Tube Lights

If we talk about LED and fluorescent tube lights most people will advise you to buy an LED tube but unless they are working in lighting industry they can’t tell you the actual difference between LED tube lights and Fluorescent tubes. If you go to buy the tube in first look the tubes will look like same and you can’t say at first instance which one is LED and which CFL is. Today we will discuss about the major differences between fluorescent and LED tube.

Fluorescent Tube Lights:

Let’s start from old technology first. We will discuss all aspects of fluorescent tube that can help you to know more about CFLs so we can start from material and structure and can move on step by step.

Material:

Tubular fluorescent lamps made of plastic, glass, mercury (inside the tube) and metal. Although mercury is not used in large quantity but this is fact that Mercury is a very hazardous material and can be risky for user. The basic structure (tube) is made of glass that has a breakage risk, and if the class break the mercury will expose.

Life:

Fluorescent tubes last anywhere from 3 to 5 years before replacement but they are dependent upon the ballast. It means the life of tube is depends on the ballast, if ballast failed so the tube will also fail. If you want to check tube will run more or not you can see the corners of tube, they start become black (glass tube not metal corner).

Brightness:

Fluorescent tube can maximum provide 50 to 100 lm/w, because a lot of energy wasted in producing heat instead of light. The other factor related to energy is as mentioned that the tube waste the energy in heating instead of generate light so you can’t get the real bright light with low wattage consumption. And the other drawback is heating; this can be really bad in summer.

I guess this will be enough to understand about the fluorescent tube so we can now discuss the LED tube lights to reach to the conclusion what we should by for us.

Recycling:

As discuss above in material, you can’t dispose fluorescent tubes in your regular garbage. These tubes can be harmful to anyone if thrown in the garbage can without any precaution. You need to dispose the fluorescent tube properly. There are fluorescent tube recycling programs for different area that cost you for proper disposal.

Material:

The construction of LED tube lights is based upon the polycarbonate lens, an aluminum backbone, and high-quality electrical components (Called diodes) that enable state-of-the-art functionality. LED tubes designed without any hazardous material which makes the tube safe.

Life:

LED tubes have a longer lifespan than any other lamp. They have more than 50,000 hours life time in average. And there is no dependency for a tube to illuminate for long. These tubes can offer their service from 7 to 10 years.

Brightness and Efficiency:

LED tube provides more than 100 lumens per watt so around 1000 to 1300 lumens per 10 watt that is a lot of light for a 10 watt fixture. This makes the tube energy efficient as with low energy consumption tube provide a bright light then CFL lamp.

Recycle:

You can complete disassemble the tube, aluminum and plastic can be thrown in the local recycling/garbage and can take the electrical component to e-cycling center. There is no harm in recycling process or no extra money is required to avail any recycling program.

Conclusion:

LED tubes have a lot of benefits over fluorescent tube. If you want to save cost and get rid of heating issues LED tubes are the best choice.
