Debunking Common Myths About Chiropractic

The popularity of chiropractic treatment is increasing in countries like the US, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, and the Philippines. People are gaining more interest in their health benefits and the relief that it can bring.

If you spend enough time on Facebook, YouTube, and other social media platforms, you’ve probably watched a video of a chiropractor aligning a patient’s spine and other joints. It is oddly satisfying for many but unpleasant for some. Because of chiropractic’s rising popularity on the internet, many speculations have popped up regarding the practice and its effectivity. In this article, we’ll clear things up.

Chiropractors are not doctors

The most common myth about chiropractors is that they are not doctors and other doctors will not recommend going to chiropractors for treatment.

Although they are more known as ‘healthcare professionals’, they can use the title and they are doctors. Chiropractors go through 4-years of undergraduate education and they take another 4-5 years for their doctorate. Just like any other doctors, chiropractors take 8 or more years of studies to be licensed. Most well-known universities that offer chiropractic degrees are located in the US.

Chiropractic does not involve science

This myth is related to the first myth of chiropractors are not doctors. Many say that chiropractors just do a lot of bone-cracking with no actual benefits. Contrary to that belief, chiropractic care requires a lot of training and knowledge as it deals with the spine and nervous system.

Due to bad posture, accidents, injuries, and more, our spine can be misaligned and can cause disorders in the nervous system. What chiropractors do is they treat neuromuscular disorders by manually adjusting or manipulating the spine. The reason why chiropractic treatments do not require any medications is that it puts emphasis on the body’s natural ability to heal.

You have to regularly go back for treatment

Many people think that chiropractic care is expensive because you have to regularly go back for treatment. While multiple sessions may be required for a full recovery, it doesn’t mean you can’t stop it once you’ve started it.

When you first visit a chiropractor, you will undergo a physical examination. Once the chiropractor has diagnosed you, they will suggest a proper treatment plan that may require multiple sessions. Once a patient finishes treatment and has recovered, he/she may not return to a chiropractor anymore.

Chiropractic care is not safe

Most get scared when watching chiropractors do procedures on patients because they often look painful. And so, many believe that it has a lot of risks and may even injure patients further.

Contrary to this belief, chiropractic care is safer than most medical procedures and has little to no risks. The idea of chiropractic is to heal patients without surgery or medications. Chiropractic care is a safe alternative medicine. Of course, a person would have to completely inform the doctor of all of their medical history because there are instances when a chiropractor may not continue treatment. In that case, a chiropractor will refer a patient to another doctor from a different field that can provide a more applicable treatment to the patient’s ailments.

Chiropractic care is just for athletes

While athletes are regular patients of chiropractors because they can effectively treat injuries without surgery, chiropractors can provide care for anyone. In fact, chiropractic care is also safe for children.

Another reason why they say chiropractic care is just for athletes is because of the cost. People believe that treatment is expensive but contrary to that, chiropractic care is cheaper and you’ll have to spend more for surgeries and daily medicines.

Chiropractors can only treat back and neck pain

Yes, it is true that the common ailments chiropractors treat are back and neck pain but they can do so much more than that. Chiropractic care is all about improving a person’s quality of life by allowing the body to function at its best.

Chiropractic treatment can improve the mobility of joints and can relieve pain on shoulders, knees, ankles, and other areas of the body. It can also heal chronic pain and even headaches. Other benefits include a stronger immune system, improve the function of organs, a better quality of sleep, more energy, and improved blood circulation.

Key takeaways

There are a lot of misconceptions about chiropractic care even though it has existed for decades and there are a lot of studies and research to back up its field. Chiropractors, just like any other doctors, go through intensive training to fulfill their duties of improving the lives of their patients.

If you have any ailments or if you feel like your body is not functioning at its best, visit a chiropractor and they can definitely help you to live your life pain-free.
