Cervical Cancer: Signs, Symptoms And Treatment

Cervical cancer occurs in the cells of the cervix, which connects the lower uterus to the vagina. It is prevalent in both urban and rural Indian women and the lack of any awareness or screening campaigns only makes it hard to keep a track of. With no government infrastructure in place, women are compelled to get screened for cancer themselves which most times leads to delayed testing.

Cervical Cancer can also be caused because of the human papillomavirus, which is a sexually transmitted disease. The immune system usually does a great job of protecting the body from this virus, but in some hosts, the virus can take an aggressive form which later on can also cause cervical cancer. Regular screening and vaccination against HPV infection can reduce the risk of cancer.

Some Of The Symptoms Of The Cancer Are

Whilst mostly the signs of cancer are not prominent, it is important to pay attention to these symptoms in particular. In the more advanced stages of cancer, these symptoms become more prominent and because of the effect that cancer has had on the organ.

  • Light bleeding between or following periods
  • Bleeding after intercourse
  • Increased vaginal discharge
  • Persistent back or pelvic pain
  • Pain during intercourse

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should consult a doctor immediately. These symptoms are not to be taken lightly and can also be a problem of some other underlying serious medical condition.

Cancer will determine how you will get the medical attention and how the team of doctors will take your case forward.

Adenocarcinoma - in this type of cancer cervical cancer begins in the column-shaped glandular cells that are found in the lining of the cervical canal.

Risk factors

Many sexual partners - The higher the number of your partners the higher is your risk of getting the HPV virus which increases the risk for cervical cancer.

Weak immune system - If you are prone to getting sick a lot it means that you are predisposed to various forms of cancer

Smoking - Studies have found that smoking usually leads to squamous cell cervical cancer.

Like most types of cancer, Surgery and Radiation are the two most common means of cervical cancer treatment.
