Mentioning the name Roland Emmerich cannot be separated from the image and typical of the epic scale Hollywood films he has worked with such as the Independence Day franchise , Godzilla (1998), The Day After Tomorrow and 2012 . Raising the story of World War II involving the United States and Japan and related to the historic events of Pearl Harbor, Emmerich worked on a film called Midway which will air in Indonesian theaters starting on November 8, 2019.
On the morning of December 7, 1941, the Japanese aircraft fleet suddenly attacked and destroyed the United States naval military base at Pearl Harbor. The attack initiated by Admiral Nagumo (Jun Kunimura) was actually predicted long ago by one of the intelligence agents Edwin Layton (Patrick Wilson), whose intelligence information was always questionable.

In order to maintain national sovereignty while strategizing to retaliate against Japanese attacks, the US President sent Admiral Chester W. Nimitz (Woody Harrelson) to organize the mission. This includes strengthening intelligence, army, naval and air forces, including a bomber squad led by Wade McClusky (Luke Evans), which oversees two reckless pilots Eugene Lyndsey (Darren Criss) and Richard 'Dick' Best (Ed Skrein). It was this squad of bombers that determined the outcome of the 4 days of the Midway War which had a significant impact on World War II.

Roland Emmerich worked on this film from a variety of character points of view. Utilizing an ensemble cast of well-known actors in his line of players, Emmerich feels like he is trying to 'outsmart' a film that is actually more suitable to be presented in an epic scale war scene that is his trademark combined with the twists and turns of war strategy from two perspectives of the United States and Japan.

The result is very obvious, in 2 hours and 18 minutes, Emmerich found it difficult to build a war strategy narrative involving many characters. There is too much to be told in this film, from the point of view of intelligence agents, general strategists, fighter pilots, soldiers who infiltrated China, wives of fighter pilots, and so on. As a result, the film goes on wordy, let alone the execution of the scene on the ground using treatment like a TV series with solid images and containing less interesting dialogue.

This is different from the scenes in the sea and air when the war takes place. Emmerich shows off his skills here. The scene of a fighter plane battling dodging bullets to drop bombs is truly eye-catching and exciting. With a budget of only 59.5 million dollars, it seems like Emmerich really made the most of it for these epic war scenes.
Technically the war scene in the air stands out the most, the CGI special effects department is one that deserves more credit. Beyond that, perhaps Robby Baumgartner 's cinematography maximizing his crew experience in the Battleship film during war scenes and editing which also deserves appreciation. While the most obvious weakness is in the sound system, especially in terms of dubbing, which doesn't sound good and is too ' clean '. For the sound of a bomb explosion, the whir of bullets or other sounds, it doesn't matter.

The side of the script written by Wes Tooke (the Colony series ) is the weakest in the film, a myriad of viewpoints and characters make the film seem like it's spinning in place. The addition of the perspective of the Japanese state also seemed to be a patch intended to give dimensions to the Japanese army, but it was disproportionate and less attractive. But the writing of Japan's unyielding cultural ethos is highly featured in this film.
The myriad of characters in this film also has an impact on not being told the complete story of one of the characters who infiltrated China. The character James Doolittle (Aaron Eckhart), who actually has an important role in the Pacific war, is told carelessly and redundantly. Not to mention the failure of emotional development between work and household for Layton's character, Best with their respective wives.
The decision to take various points of view with various characters has great potential to confuse the audience and make the film run boring. Moreover, this film arguably has no surprises because it is based on a true story. But this film looks like it will spoil those who like historical war films.
The acting department has a negative effect from this film script, the actors in the film feel unable to maximize the quality of their acting due to the lack of screentime or dramatic moments to show their acting. Ed Skrein (Deadpool, Game of Thrones) as the holder of the most screentime probably deserves more credit along with Patrick Wilson (The Conjuring, Aquaman ). The rest is nothing that stands out, not even Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight, Erin Brockovich) being the least fortunate in this talented lineup.
Famous names in the figure of Dennis Quaid (Frequency) , Woody Harrelson (Zombieland, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri) , Luke Evans (Dracula Untold, Fast & Furious 6) , Tadanobu Asano (Battleship, Thor) Darren Criss (Glee series), Nick Jonas ( Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle ) and Mandy Moore (A Walk To Remember) felt redundant to be featured in this film.
One thing that is interesting is the insertion of a unique moment at the start of the battle at Midway, which shows the figure of the legendary director John Ford (Geoffrey Blake) in the middle of the shooting location and was also injured by a Japanese fighter attack. The results of filming there later became part of a short documentary by John Ford entitled The Battle of Midway .
Even though the development of the narrative is swirling and has too many characters and points of view, Midway has a variety of combat aircraft battles that are well-crafted by experienced director, Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, 2012) which has the potential to spoil fans of war films set in the history of the Pacific War. between the United States and Japan which had a significant effect on the outcome of World War II.
