There was something poetic amidst the gloom that was happening Below Zero . The stories that never rest us always make a tense feeling nestled with the audience, but in the midst of the tension we feel there is an emotional feeling that secretly creeps up behind it to pounce on the audience when they are not aware of it. Is how this film expresses the conscience of the characters and how the characters in this film feel very alive and "human" why the Spanish film that has aired on Netflix is such a shocking film.
Here, we follow a policeman Martín (Javier Gutiérrez) who finds the task of transferring six prisoners to their new prison along with another officer, Montesinos (Isak Férriz). Martín is described as someone who abides by the rules, he always follows the existing rules as best and as strictly as possible and his nature is arguing with Montesinos who does not hesitate to threaten and hurt his prisoners. The two overlooked their differences when the detention truck they were driving hit the spike strip and leaked the truck's wheels. The police car escorting them in front of him had already been hit and had flipped over on the side of the road. Confusion engulfed the entire truck and a mysterious shooter began to haunt this truck by shooting at it in succession.

From the very beginning of the film, director Lluís Quílez has built this film's tension. Before we were introduced to Martín, we saw a scene where someone in the dark night and pouring rain was torturing someone and asked for a location, something this young man did not know, and ended it by burying this person alive. Who is this person? What is his role in the story of this film? From the start we know who he is, he doesn't hesitate to do anything for the answer he is looking for.
And Below Zero does look smart in continuing his story. While trapped in the truck, we were never told who the shooter was and what was his purpose? When we think that maybe this prisoner is planning the truck hijacking, the film's narrative plays and dispels our suspicions. Not only Martín, but the audience is always made to guess what will happen next and the feeling makes this film can surprise us without us knowing. Especially when you find out that the weather in the film is winter and this film does not escape the use of temperature to advance the story and add to the tension.

But what keeps Below Zero successful in gripping viewers' attention is how Lluís Quílez and writer Fernando Navarro have managed to assemble a group of characters with real personalities and tangible emotions. Initially we might see these six prisoners as bad-hearted and conscientious bad guys, but as the film progresses we are given the opportunity to see the lives of everyone here get closer. Little by little, there's a sense of sympathy we have for some of the characters here and that feeling is something why this film always catches our eye.
In the middle of the film, when things are already chaotic and confusion hits, Below Zero cleverly introduces characters who can change how the story goes, and again we are toyed with our feelings towards the characters in it. This film manages to manipulate our feelings and also the characters in it. At one point, we may think this person is evil, but after a while he may not be as bad as we think. Vice versa, someone we think is good may not be as good as we think. That way, the film becomes more unpredictable and we are becoming more and more curious about how this story will end.

The film is suspenseful and exciting because we are also made to guess, but what actually surprised me was how this film was able to hit with its emotional and tragic characters. When the film wants to finish its story and the conflict has heated up, we finally learn why the shooter decided he wanted to hijack this truck and unexpectedly the emotional side of this film appears and we are also confused about how to react because as spectators, we have already given sympathy. to him with a tragic story even though we know what he did was wrong. This is where moral ambiguity comes into play and this is where Below Zero surprises me.

Another thing why this film feels so strong with each of its characters is how Below Zero feels minimalist both from how the narrative and plot are, but also from how conflicts arise and work. This film never wants to try to tell something that is not important, the film's setting is mostly in the truck and the story of this film is only set that night. Finally, this film relies more on how each character contributes to advancing the story and all of them perfectly succeed in creating a story that is not only gripping in terms of narrative but also heart-wrenching the more we deepen it.
