Does the Universe Have A Purpose? It has been suggested by theists that if the Universe has a purpose behind it all then there is, indeed must be, a God. If the Universe does not have a purpose then there is no God. Well maybe, or maybe not. It's time for a closer look.
Well firstly if the Universe has a purpose it doesn't of necessity mean that God done it. There are thousands of deities that humans have believed in and worshipped that might have done it. The Flying Spaghetti Monster might have done it. Pixies might have done it. A mortal flesh-and-blood computer / software programmer might have done it if our life, our Universe, and our everything is but a simulation.
In any event, when theists say that the Universe has a purpose, they of course mean that the purpose of the Universe is to spawn the human species, or even just God's chosen people. Since this is obviously the position of True Believers, I suggest that this alleged "purpose" isn't the word of God but rather the word of humans - self-centered, egotistical humans who believe that the entire Universe was created by God solely to produce human civilization; human beings who will then have a relationship with their creator. IMHO it's all hogwash no matter how warm and fuzzy that belief might make you feel.
Purpose wasn't to create the elements since some are pretty useless (the inert gases) or radioactively decay away or aren't even naturally occurring (only exist due to human experiments).
The purpose wasn't galaxies, stars or solar systems.
Galaxies are just collections of stars (and interstellar dust) and some galaxies are ultra-energetic (unsuited to life) and some galaxies are in collision with other galaxies and thus don't seem to have a great deal of positive purpose. Stars can exist independently of being housed in a galaxy so galaxies lose some relevance. Stars could have a purpose - let there be light - and in addition give a stable mass for planets to orbit and to provide energy to allow and support life on some of those planets at least. But then too, some stars (maybe with planets and maybe with life) burp (go nova) and even explode (go supernova) and in any event no star is eternal and go through an evolutionary process that eventually isn't bio-friendly.
Maybe the ultimate purpose was to create Black Holes only they too eventually decay away (Hawking radiation) and in any event Black Holes don't seem to serve any real positive purpose but can do some real mischief. Maybe Black Holes were designed to have a negative purpose.
Planets are mainly uninhabitable (judging from our own solar system). Apart from that, in our own solar system,Jupiter (and maybe Saturn) are valuable to terrestrial life and ultimately us, by deflecting and absorbing comets, rouge asteroids and other 'minor' debris that could wipe out terrestrial life forms (including us). Alas, there was the one that got away, the one that non-avian dinosaurs found out about to their cost.
Purpose couldn't have been life since over 90% of terrestrial life forms have gone kaput - the way of the Dodo. Purpose couldn't be the evolution of humans since any one of a dozen natural events could wipe us out, assuming we don't do ourselves in first. In any event, for most life forms, life is short, nasty and brutish. Further, it appears that 99.9999% of the Universe is totally unfit for life, at least life as we know it.
Further, you are born human but you are also born without any actual purpose. You ultimately make your own purpose(s) throughout your life, albeit not usually in isolation but usually with input from parents, family, neighbours, teachers, work colleagues, other authority figures, and sometimes even from the religious clergy. However, as a generalisation, humans do NOT like someone imposing their will, their purpose on us, so if God gives you purpose, well that's akin to a dictatorship. You should be captain of your own ship and create your own purpose(s).
Conclusion: Life, the Universe and just everything just is. Humans just are, but humans do have a purpose both relatively collectively and of course individually. Humans conceive, evaluate and carry out their self-assigned purpose, by humans and for humans (and non-humans as well as other things to that are within the human sphere). Humans assign their own purpose(s) - no deities required.
