Shy Personality Tips and Advice

Not a very outgoing person? Well don't worry, you're not alone. Many people describe themselves as shy and introverted, and would like to learn how to overcome their shyness. Even if you believe you have a shy personality type, there are things you can do to become more outgoing. Let's go over some tips and advice designed to get you talking to more people, and becoming the person you want to be.

Tip #1- Make a List.

Chances are there's times when you feel shy, and there are times when you feel great and outgoing. The first step you need to take is to write down the top 5 or 10 times you feel shy. Maybe you feel very shy when you go out to a party, or maybe you feel very timid at school. Determine when you feel shy, write them down, and write down the causes if you know what they are.

Tip #2- Visualize Success.

Once your list is complete, it's time to do some visualizing. Look at one of the occurrences you listed, close your eyes, and re-create the occurrence in your mind. Feel your shy personality in full force, and feel the negative shy feelings you'd normally feel. Not get rid of that image, take a few deep breaths, and re-create the image again. Only this time visualize yourself being outgoing and having a great time. Repeat this process daily for every occurrence you listed.

Tip #3- Create Responses

One common reason people feel shy is that they don't know what to say. You can easily overcome this barrier by thinking about what to say beforehand. Say for example, you get shy when meeting women. Take some time to think of different things you could say to women when you meet them. Like the tip above, rehearse using these responses in your mind. This way, whenever the situation comes up again, you'll have something to say.

Tip #4- Get Out More

If you're feeling shy and lonely, it's probably because you don't get out of the house much. Many introverted people would say that they isolate themselves more than the average person. It's obvious why this would cause one to be shy when they do encounter social situations. If you don't get out much, start looking for ways to get out of the house more. Maybe you can go out with your friends on the weekends, or maybe you can find a new hobby like yoga or dancing. Whatever you do, make sure you're pushing yourself past your comfort zone.

Tip #5- Use Affirmations

Using affirmations can be a simple way to build your confidence and overcome your shy personality. Affirmations are short statements you say to yourself, designed to reach your subconscious mind and change the way you think. Statements like "I am becoming a more outgoing person" and "I feel great meeting and talking with new people" are great examples. You can even download subliminal affirmation MP3's and listen to them on your MP3 player!

Using these tips will definitely help you overcome your shyness and expand your comfort zone. But it's up to you to apply them. In the end, you're the only one responsible for your success. So decide that you want to change, and design a strategy for yourself.
