Garmin Forerunner 310: Your Personal GPS Training Tool

Garmin has done it again with their Forerunner 310 XT, the latest in their offering of wrist-worn portable GPS devices. They have been making GPS devices since 1989 and are now strong competitors in the sports market, especially with this device specifically designed with the triathlete in mind due to its excellent quality and water resistance (up to 164 ft or 50m). But not only endurance sportspersons have a use for this as swimmers, runner, golfers, campers, hikers, cyclists and even golfers find these devices extremely useful.

With its HotFix satellite software, the Garmin Forerunner 310 XT can track you in virtually any conditions and keep the data of your run, bike or swim for analysis afterwards in the comfort of your home by sending the information wirelessly to your PC. This is the ideal training tool, especially if you combine it with the optional heart rate band which can keep tabs on your pulse rate.

Water is the only real obstacle for GPS tracking as the signals do not reach underwater, but this Garmin device has a feature where it can estimate your time, distance and speed whereby you only have to switch on the swim mode prior to your swim and switch it off at the end. By checking the satellite fixes, the necessary calculations are quickly made to give you a very accurate idea of your swim performance.

A triathlete does not want to waste valuable transition time between one heat and the next, so this device comes with an optional quick mount release from the wrist to the bike mount; effortless and logged to later analyse how long the transition took.

Best described as a large watch, this device sits nicely and comfortably on the wrist at just 2.5 oz. It has a large and clear display with an overall new look for Garmin that has moved away from its usual darker colours to a fresher grey and orange. A battery life of up to 20 hours should suffice for even the most extreme athlete.

The Garmin Forerunner 310 XT is considered by many sports professionals to be one of the best that Garmin has made, and its ease-of-use has made it very popular. It comes bundled with a charging clip, AC charger, USB ANT Stick and manuals and the device itself has a host of features far too numerous to name here; the advice is to take your time to learn how to use this training tool to get the best out of it.
