PMI Certification - Can You Manage It?

If you are thinking of a career in project management one of the best moves you could make is to get a PMI certification. Project Management Institute is one of the world's leading organisations in certification programs, setting a high standard globally in this field. Having a PMI certification stands you a good chance of earning higher salaries than your colleagues and peers. The credentials are always up to date and once you have one you then have a chance to maintain your knowledge and develop your skills by earning professional development units (PDU).

There are six different certifications in PMI. The first two are Certified Associate (CAPM), and Professional (PMP). The CAPM certification is for less experienced candidates and lasts for five years, after which time it needs to be renewed by way of a further exam. To be eligible you need a high school diploma and either experience or project management education. This is the one PMI certification that does not require you to earn PDUs. The PMP certification is for already experienced project managers and requires either a four-year degree or high school diploma along with experience and project management education. This certification requires the earning of 60 PDUs during a three-year cycle.

With the exception of CAPM all of the certifications require either a high school diploma or a four-year degree (such as a Batchelor's) and a specified number of hours work experience and education in that field. Full details of all requirements are on the PMI site.

Further certifications are in Program Management Professional (PgMP) and Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP). To qualify for the PgMP you need experience in project and program management. To earn this certification you need to not only sit an exam but also go through a panel review and assessment. To qualify for the PMI-ACP you need to have various hours experience in certain fields. Continuing certification in these two requires 60 and 30 PDUs respectively in a three-year cycle.

The final two certifications are Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP) and Scheduling Professional (PMI-SP). 30 PDUs in a three-year cycle are required to maintain the PMI-RMP certification and PMI-SP requires 30 PDUs in a three year cycle.

Getting a PMI certification is the first step in a continuing professional environment. It will help you whatever industry you work in and wherever you work, as it is completely flexible. Once you decide which is the best PMI certification for you, go ahead and get it - you will not regret it.
