The interview is a significant time for us all. of course, after applying somewhere, an interview call from them is an opportunity to prove the best of ourselves. However, in an interview, the questions asked by the employer or the interviewer are not at all times legal. Yes, there is a difference between legal and illegal questions. There are certain questions that you are not liable to answer them as they are illegal and they should not be asking them. Let us see in the following paragraphs why an employer asks illegal questions, what are the examples of illegal questions and how we should respond to such questions.
The interview is an opportunity where you are in the position of proving yourself for a particular position. You want to tell them the most about you in regard to why they should give you the job and on the part of the employer or the interviewer, they want to know more and more about you in the interview session to see if you fit for the job or not.
The reason why many employers might ask you illegal questions could be that he/she wants you to get rid of the job. It could also be that they want to see how you react to them or sometimes the interviewer may not even know that the questions he/she is asking are illegal. Illegal questions would be personal questions that have nothing to do with the job. These could be outcasting and discriminatory.
Hence, not all times is the interviewer trying to keep you away from the job but it could also be that the interviewer is new or not well trained on what questions to ask and what to not. It could also be a test of your reactions by come interviewers. So, don’t react to these questions as it might not always be a harmful attempt.
Illegal questions asked by interviewers could be of four types. These include questions of physical disabilities, race, color, creed, personal background, family, and relationship questions. Examples of illegal interview questions are:
One thing you should remember for sure is that as an interviewee, you are in a weak position. You are in the need of the job and that particular position. You must try your best to be calm and non-hostile about any illegal questions that are asked by the interviewer. Once you get the job, you can always decide whether to go for the job or not.
One way of answering the illegal question is by remaining calm and simply answering all the questions without getting offended by the interviewer. In this way, if the interviewer is testing your reaction, you will pass on that. Even if you don’t like to answer the questions just answer them as it is better to answer them than to risk your chance on the job.
Another way is that you could just not answer the illegal questions as you have the right to not answer any illegal questions. But one thing you remember is that you are in a very sensitive position while at the interview so it is better to be as tactful as possible with your answers. If you don’t answer the questions the interviewer would think that you are not good enough and this could risk your job.
