The MV X-Press Pearl, which burned for 13 days off the west coast of Sri Lanka, in addition to carrying 25 tons of nitric acid chemicals, also carried 350 tons of oil which is now feared to pollute the surrounding waters. The Marine Environmental Protection Authority claimed to have prepared a dispersant, and a number of other equipment to anticipate leaks.

The incident threatened to become an environmental disaster for the island nation in South Asia. Previously, the government reported that fires on cargo ships had triggered large-scale plastic pollution in the surrounding area.

It is feared that the cargo ship which is now in danger of sinking will add to the ecological disaster through oil pollution.

"So far there have been no leaks, but we have prepared for the worst case scenario," said Sri Lankan navy spokeswoman Indika de Silva. Vessels belonging to the Indian coast guard have also been alerted to deal with the oil spill.

Operator MV X-Press from Singapore said the ship was slowly sinking after failing to be towed from the coastal area on Wednesday (2/6). "We can confirm that the stern of the ship is currently on the seabed at a depth of 21 meters, and the bow is also slowly sinking," the company said in a press statement.

The Sri Lankan navy said the bow of the cargo ship was still above the water's surface on Thursday (3/6) morning. "Even if the bow sinks to the bottom of the sea, the ship's deck and bridge are still above the surface," Indika told AFP.

He claimed that his party had not seen any indication of a leak from the ship's fuel tank. Even so, eyewitnesses said they saw lumps of oil floating above sea level, about 40 kilometers from the incident site.

Disastrous for marine ecosystems
The sinking of the MV X-Press also spilled microplastic seeds into the surrounding waters. As a result, Sri Lankan authorities banned fishing activities as far as 50 nautical miles from the coast. It is feared that plastic pollution will paralyze the ecosystem on which the fishermen live.

Before sinking, the ship was hit by an explosion that burned about 1,500 containers on deck. The ship's manifest shows that, in addition to carrying 81 containers of "dangerous cargo," the MV X-Press was also carrying large quantities of lubricating oil.

Authorities believe the fire spread from a leak of nitric acid, which the crew reported on May 11, nine days before the fire. Nitric acid is mostly used to make chemical fertilizers. The ship departed from the port in Hazira, India, bound for Colombo.

The fire was extinguished with the help of the Indian coast guard and Dutch company SMIT

Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa asked Australia for help in evaluating the ecological damage caused by the incident. Sri Lanka is one of the most biodiverse countries in South Asia.

The government also announced that it was conducting an investigation into the alleged crime. Currently, the three officers of the ship, two Russian nationals and an Indian citizen, have been questioned and have not been allowed to go abroad.
