NVIDIA aligns their graphics driver releases with game launches, Ubisoft’s The Crew 2. The game comes out on Friday, but the graphics vendors like to give a little room if possible (and a Friday makes that much easier than a Tuesday). – you get The Crew 2 Standard Edition free when you purchase a qualifying GTX 1080, GTX 1080 Ti, GeForce gaming desktop, or GeForce gaming laptop. Personally, I would wait for new graphics cards to launch, but if you need one now then – hey – free game!
GeForce 398.36 is actually from the 396.xx branch, which means that it’s functionally similar to the previous drivers. NVIDIA seems to release big changes with the start of an even-numbered branch, such as new API support, and then spend the rest of the release, and its odd-numbered successor, fixing bugs and adding game-specific optimizations. While this means that there shouldn’t be anything surprising, it also means that it should be stable and polished.
If you were waiting for the blue-screen issue with Gears of War 4 to be fixed on Pascal GPUs, then grab your chainsaws it should be good to go. Likewise, if you had issues with G-SYNC causing stutter outside of G-SYNC games, such as the desktop, then that has apparently been fixed, too.
Nvidia GeForce 398.36 is now available to download. The new driver serves for better optimization of The Crew 2, the open-world racing game developed by Ubisoft. Furthermore, this update adds multiple other SLI profiles for different games such as Dark Souls Remastered, Hand of Fate 2, Need For Speed Payback, and Super Mega Baseball 2.
However, some of the already known issues in the previous update remain intact, which means some players will have to wait a bit more to deal with these problems. Mainly, most of the issues are around SLI and HDR, and as such will probably result in a late fix.

The new Game Ready Driver provides the latest performance optimizations, profiles, and bug fixes for Zombie Army: Dead War 4. In addition, this release also provides optimal support for Apex Legends Season 4 and Metro Exodus: Sam's Story.
In the last Game Ready Driver, we introduced a new Maximum Framerate Setting into the NVIDIA Control Panel which allowed gamers to set the max framerate a 3D application or game can render. With the latest Game Ready Driver, we've incorporated community feedback asking for the limits to be extended. As a result, framerate limits can be as low as 20fps and can be raised as high as 1000fps.
Game Ready for Wolfenstein: Youngblood with Ray TracingThe new Game Ready Driver provides the latest performance optimizations, profiles, and bug fixes for Wolfenstein: Youngblood including the introduction of ray tracing. In addition, this release also provides optimal support for Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, Bright Memory: Infinite, and the latest version of Quake II RTX.Maximum FramerateIn response to overwhelming demand from the community, we have introduced a new Maximum Framerate Setting into the NVIDIA Control Panel. Use the maximum frame rate setting to set the max framerate a 3D application or game can render. This feature is particularly helpful when trying to save power, reduce system latency or paired with your NVIDIA G-SYNC display to stay within variable refresh rate range. Image Sharpening ImprovementsLeveraging gamer feedback over the last few months, we have been continually improving the new image sharpening feature. With this latest version, you have the ability to toggle GPU scaling independent of whether image sharpening is enabled or disabled. Variable Rate Super SamplingWe introduced a new VRSS feature… Variable Rate Super Sampling (VRSS) is a new technique to improve image quality in VR games which uses NVIDIA Variable Rate Shading (VRS) to dynamically apply up to 8x super sampling to the center of the VR display when GPU headroom is available. In doing so, VRSS can improve image quality at the focal point of the eye while always maintaining the 90 FPS needed to deliver a smooth VR experience. Share Freestyle FiltersGamers can now import and export Freestyle/Ansel filters and take advantage of a new split screen filter to help showcase their improvements!
The NVIDIA graphics driver contains a vulnerability (CVE-2018-6260) that may allowaccess to application data processed on the GPU through a side channel exposed by theGPU performance counters. GPU performance counters are needed by developers inorder to use NVIDIA developer tools such as CUPTI, Nsight Graphics, and NsightCompute. In order to address CVE-2018-6260 the driver needs to be updated andadditional steps listed below are needed to disable access to non-admin users. For moreinformation about CVE-2018-6260 visit the NVIDIA Security Bulletin 4772.Access to GPU performance counters should be disabled for non-admin users who donot need to use NVIDIA developer tools.
Restricting access to GPU performance counters can be accomplished through theNVIDIA Control Panel->Developer->Manage GPU Performance Counters page (NV ControlPanel v8.1.950). Refer to the Developer->Manage GPU Performance Counters section of theNVIDIA Control Panel Help for instructions.

Developer preview for NVIDIA RTX ray tracing technology for DirectX 12. NVIDIA RTX supports the Microsoft DirectX Raytracing (DXR) API on NVIDIA Volta GPUs.In order to get started with developing DirectX Raytracing applications accelerated by RTX, you'll need the following.
Added a new API that lets the client reconfigure the decoder resolution and other post processing parameters (such as the display resolution, cropping rectangle, and aspect ratio of the decoded frame) without having to destroy and recreate the decoder instance. This API is useful in scenarios where the decoder instance initialization time takes up a significant portion of the overall decode execution time; for example, in back-to-back decoding of multiple short clips of different resolutions. The new API will be included in Video Codec SDK 8.2, which is expected to release in late Q2 2018.
Security UpdatesThis driver adds security updates for driver components. Fixed issues are CVE-2018-6247, CVE-2018-6248, CVE-2018-6249, CVE-2018-6250, CVE-2018-6251, CVE-2018-6252, CVE-2018-6253. These CVEs are related to kernel mode, DirectX 10 and OpenGL drivers where certain operations may lead to Denial of Service or Escalation of Privileges.
Fixed CVE-2017-5753: Computer systems with microprocessors utilizing speculative execution and branch prediction may allow unauthorized disclosure of information to an attacker with local user access via a side-channel analysis.

In cases where actual malware is found, the packages are subject to removal. Software sometimes has false positives. Moderators do not necessarily validate the safety of the underlying software, only that a package retrieves software from the official distribution point and/or validate embedded software against official distribution point (where distribution rights allow redistribution).
