In Solidarity With Beloved Weeping Mother India

I saw with Wonderful interest the film documentary, Mother India: Life through the Eyes of the Orphan (2012). With 31,000,000 orphans in India, this film invites us briefly into the lifestyles of 25 orphaned or abandoned young individuals (ages three to four 25) who live across the railway in South India. I've been thinking a lot about India that is suffering profoundly from COVID. The world now is delivering material help, blessings, and best wishes to our international neighbors, our sisters, and brothers from India.

We meet Geetha, Reddy, Nagaraju, Lakshmi, Kotegwari, Polayya, Yellapah, Satkyananda, Aadamma, Yesu, Abdullabi, Baachir, Chilipada, Raja, Ramu, Sekar, Siva, Gopi, P. Gopi, Hussein, Kiran, Mark, Nageswararao, Nami, and Narendra, these beautiful titles, shining human beings worthy of their regard. David and Shawn interviewed the kids and attempted to find life through their eyes. The youngsters sleep together on dirt or cement floors littered with needles and condoms. Some sleep at shop fronts. They wrapped themselves in blankets so they could avoid mosquitoes and being known as an exploitable young person.

The children beg money for food from passing train passengers, occasionally first"cleaning" or sweeping the train-car ground, then holding their hands out for a couple of rupees (one or two cents ). At the close of the day, they might have a couple of dollars to buy food. The group's chief was the solicitous Reddy ("I just have my mom; she beat me, therefore I abandoned."), in his early 20s but having lived over 10 years on the street. Reddy would muster the group to help each other out. Lakshmi was abused by a parent that burnt her with a sexy steel rod. When her boyfriend watched her talking to another boy, then he forced her to place her hands under the train. She dropped two hands. She stated she had a baby boy but that he died when three days old. Satkyananda's parents were killed in a bus collision. Nagaraju's parents beat him and he hurried away. A third of those children were missing a limb, so often from falling once jumping on the rail (train hopping). The kids first wished to show David and Shawn their wounds missing fingers, hand, arm, leg, deep lesions. That is a major unhidden but typically ignored component of this pain that they carried.

"Not above but one of," David and Shawn opt to leave their comfortable, air-conditioned Gotham Hotel area and sleep with the homeless young on the dirt and concrete ground. They experienced, if only for nighttime, vulnerability to the extremely hot weather and a host of biting mosquitoes. Waking up early, they found children huddled asleep jointly, a bunny of safety like a group of puppies, blanketed people mounds. The kids brush their teeth in the well with their palms and powder made on the area by massaging stones together.

The young men and women are invited to attend a fair where all have fun and excitement, games, and rides, even taking their heads off constant attention to needing to survive. Some smoked or chewed tobacco, along with others, dangerously sharing needles, injected an unknown substance that"removed the sadness." A few"huffed" by sucking in fumes of rags soaked with Erazex,"White-Out" correction fluid that cost 50 cents, "to not believe the annoyance of police beatings, cold and rain in winter, along with mosquito bites. "A trip to the burial site of a youngster who died three weeks earlier of an overdose is filmed.

The kids were sexualized, the older kids abusing the younger children. Geetha joins the sad story of being offered into the red-light district, even sex for money. Serendipitously, two guys recognized him back to the youth hostel. Folding his hands, Geetha says, "I am grateful to these 2 guys" HIV/AIDS is normal among these young people.

Nevertheless, they have hopes and dreams. Their eyes can still light up. "I want to conduct my own business and revel in life as a regular individual." "I want to be a mechanic." "I want a fantastic house and to wed." "I want to have a house for myself" David and Shawn turn to their friends at Harvest India, to put within their primary orphanage the two youngest children, sisters, Kotegwari, also a seven-year-old girl, and Polayya, a three-year-old boy. The group matches a bus and off they go to see the orphanage, where they receive haircuts, shower, and receive new clothes, and savor a delicious meal of chicken, different curries, rice, as well as yogurt. The kids were shining, "walking distinct," with lace, self-respect, and even dignity.

Reddy along with the kids supports Kotegwari and Polayya to move in the orphanage though they would not decide to reside there. They provide a house to 1400 kids at 26 different locations. Harvest India has been in existence for more than 40 decades. Suresh states the lost children are miserable, distrustful, feeling betrayed, homeless, neglected, no one to talk to, abused, without mother and dad, swallowed as opposed to caring for, exploited rather than loved. Suresh himself grew up in an orphanage where following his father died young, his mother had discovered work. Suresh and Christina start the process where Kotegwari and Polayya can be adopted by Harvest India.

Harvest India with all the good it is doing isn't without criticism (honest or not) because of its not being forthright about its own Christian missionary attention on convert the 74% Hindu and 12% Muslim inhabitants (and other minority religions) into Christianity which is currently only 6% of India's population. But this film raises our consciousness in mind and heart, influencing our planet for the better, small steps to potentially big healing.
