Recently, Disney really likes to turn their animated films into live-action, namely Aladdin and The Lion King . Even though I haven't seen the two films, I read that they are quite bad. The main complaint of viewers and critics is that Disney's live-action films haven't changed much of their animated films, so they feel the same and are a waste of time.

But it's different from Maleficent . When Disney announced that they would make the antagonist from the animated film Sleeping Beauty the main character, of course the audience was curious about how they would do that. When the release of Maleficent in 2014, the film was quite interesting, especially because of the role of Angelina Jolie as the witch, which I can say is very precise. The story is similar to Disney films in general, but I still like Angelina as the main character.

5 years passed, and out of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil , a continuation of the previous film where Angelina returned to play the witch and Elle Fanning also returned as Aurora, who has now become queen for the Kingdom of Moors. They live in peace, of course, with Maleficent always watching Aurora because of her role as adoptive mother. Aurora is also in love with Prince Philip (Harris Dickinson) of the Ulstead Kingdom, even though the two kingdoms are at war.

Aurora was finally proposed by Prince Philip, with the prince's father, King John (Robert Lindsay) agreeing and hoping that the marriage would reconcile the two kingdoms. But the queen of the Ulstead Kingdom, Ingrith (Michelle Pfeiffer) rejects the marriage and devises a cunning plan to cancel the marriage and destroy the Moors. This is where the main story takes place, with Maleficent having to face both the queen and her army.

Angelina Jolie ( Salt ) can be said to be the perfect actress to play Maleficent, because she has undoubted charisma. With her very beautiful face, big blue eyes, sharp cheeks, she can portray an elegant and intimidating character like Maleficent. Appearances can kill, that word seems especially suited to being crowned Angelina Jolie's Maleficent.

If the Maleficent character feels like it really fits, my feelings will be different from the other characters. Aurora, played by Elle Fanning ( The Neon Demon ), doesn't seem to have much effect. Indeed, her character symbolizes joy and kindness, but her presence does not have a big impact because the attention of the audience always refers to Maleficent who gives a big effect every time she appears. Likewise with other characters, such as Prince Philip or Queen Ingrith. It seems that their appearance is almost always classified by Angelina Jolie's appearance which is indeed stunning.

Meanwhile, from the story itself, there is nothing so interesting. Yes, we can see other dark fey (the term for a fairy similar to Maleficent) besides Maleficent, but maybe because of her bad introduction or the story that is not in sync with other stories, other dark fey that has just emerged feels sudden and even feels strange.

Then halfway back, the story of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil changed from initially telling a story like a fairy tale, finally to a war story with fantasy elements. Dark fey against humans, is like other fantasy adventure films ( The Lord of the Rings , maybe?). The problem with them wanting to include war in the film is because of the limitations they have.

You see, this film was made by Disney, which clearly targets Maleficent: Mistress of Evil for audiences of all ages, both young children and adults. Because of that target, they really have to limit what they will make so that the audience from all walks of life can enjoy it. This is where I feel the war scene it has is very lacking.

Yes, they already have an adequate background with characters that are suitable for war. They already have the right ingredients to make a war that is actually already very fierce. However, because of their limitations, the war they produced felt very limited and half-hearted. They want to make a war scene, but are afraid to show excessive violence, and it becomes a war that can even make the audience feel bored.

Is Maleficent: Mistress of Evil a continuation that the previous film needed? Maybe not. Is the story that he presents will indeed be directly connected with the previous story? Some are, but most are not. The only thing I can recommend why you should watch this is if you are a big fan of Angelina Jolie as the iconic character, Maleficent.
