In a time period when social distancing and staying indoors for large amounts of time are necessary for many people's safety, the already immensely popular genre of online multiplayer games has skyrocketed. While evident through multiple games of varying settings and styles, Nintendo exclusive Ninjala can now also claim an impressive and ever-rising player base.
Having first released in June in 2020, Ninjala has seen a surprising rise in both growth and popularity over the past few months. Developers SOLEIL took to social media to not only make a new download count announcement, but also reward the community with a generous in game thanks to it's players.
Taking to Twitter, the developers announced the free to play game has reached an impressive 6 million downloads. In honor of this milestone, all players will also be granted 100 free Jala, the in game currency utilized to purchase game passes, items and cosmetics. Interested gamers should check the player inbox by March 24th at 6:59pm to claim the reward.
A unique and colorful multiplayer game, Ninjala features matches with up to eight players as well as a solo Battle Royale mode. The games setting and story is centered around a tournament being held by the fictional WNA (World Ninja Association) which has invented bubblegum that allows people with ninja DNA to perform the ancient art of Ninjutsu. Interestingly, the game focuses mainly on a parry and block melee combat system, utilizing various different weapon types and styles of play.
As a free to play game, the bar for entry to try this off beat multiplayer and story experience has been removed, encouraging players to give it a try who might overlook it otherwise. It will be interesting to see if Ninjala's player base continues to grow and expand as future updates and collaborations keep rewarding its fans.
Ninjala fans can now take a closer look at upcoming updates in the recently uploaded Developer Diary #8. The brief video shares details regarding new Gum Weapons, the upcoming second season, and most notably, the game's first official collaboration/crossover.
Although the video covers many details pertaining to Season 2, which begins on August 26th, it ends with the exciting announcement of a Season 2 in-game crossover. Sonic the Hedgehog will be featured as the first official in-game Ninjala collaboration.
Aside from the fact that the crossover will take place during the game's second season, developers have only revealed that this "legendary icon will appear in the world of Ninjala" in some way. Many players are anticipating some Sonic-themed outfits, or perhaps weapons, but this announcement may simply imply the inclusion of Sonic as a guest character, or a Sonic-themed story mission.
GungHo Online Entertainment (GOE)'s surprise hit has only been out for a handful of months, but dedicated fans have been on high-alert for this crossover announcement since before the summer. Early datamines revealed Sonic-related cosmetics in Ninjala, so despite the lack of official information, players have been convinced the hedgehog would be rolling into action eventually. For example, this description of an in-game sticker has been part of the game's data since April: "the mad scientist Dr. Robotnik striking a victory pose. Let the whole world know your ambitions."
