With our interfaces that use Mix Control or Focusrite Control, please note that the driver required for the unit (if applicable) is included within the installation for that control software. As such, only one installation is necessary for these interfaces, they include.
With interfaces that do not use any control software, a standalone driver installation will be necessary, depending on your computer, and is available from the appropriate download page as mentioned above. These interfaces include.
The Scarlett range and Saffire 6 2.0 does not require a driver on Mac. In this case, whilst you will not need to install anything on a Mac to use the iTrack Solo, Scarlett Solo, 2i2 & 2i4 and Saffire 6 2.0, we would strongly advise still installing the appropriate control software for the larger units mentioned above as it will allow further control of the unit as well as facilitating any firmware update that may be available.
Featuring six configurations of ins and outs with the best performing Scarlett mic preamps the range has ever heard, now with Air, high headroom instrument inputs, and high-performance converters, Scarlett is enabling millions of musicians, songwriters and producers to record, mix and play back audio in studio quality everywhere, all the time.
Step 6: Once the installation has fully completed, connect your interface. Windows may display the message 'Installing device driver software'. This message simply means that Windows is assigning the driver to the interface, nothing additional is actually being installed.
When troubleshooting driver-related issues with your Scarlett interface, it may be necessary to uninstall and re-install your Focusrite Drivers. If using the Scarlett 6i6 model and above, we will also want to re-install Focusrite Control (2nd gen devices) or Scarlett MixControl (1st gen devices).
- Fixed an issue that could cause the device and a DAW to run at different sample rates if a user tried to force a sample rate change from Focusrite Control/Scarlett Mix Control/Focusrite Notifier while a DAW session was running.
Your Scarlett interface is a class compliant device, which means that you do not need to install anything to use it on a Mac. Simply connect your Scarlett to your computer using the USB cable and you’ll be able to select it as the input and output device for your system (System Preferences > Sound) and as the input and output device in your recording software.
Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 Mac Driver and Software Downloads. This is a Macintosh-only update containing the latest version of Scarlett Mix Control and all drivers required to get up and running with your Scarlett interface.
Note: Your OS should automatically switch the computer’s default audio connections to be the USB port to which the Scarlett 18i8 is connected. To verify this, go to System Preferences > Sound, and check that the active input and output are set to Scarlett 18i8 USB. For more detailed setup options on a Mac, open Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup.
Scarlett interfaces sit at the heart of more music-making, recording and production spaces than any other range, and 18i20 is Scarlett’s most versatile interface. The rack-mountable 3rd Generation 18i20 gives you 18 inputs and 20 outputs of incredible sound quality. Enough to make any space into a fully-fledged recording studio.
18i20’s high channel count and even higher audio quality are designed to give you all the ins and outs you need to get the best sound every time. Leave all your instruments plugged in for easy writing and recording or put the vast I/O to work in large recording sessions. Make anywhere your control room with the built-in talkback mic. Reference your recordings on multiple monitor setups with speaker switching. Wherever you take 18i20, you’re ready to produce.
With Scarlett 18i20’s dual ADAT optical In and Out ports, you can expand your recording and mixing capabilities, adding up to eight further inputs and outputs at 48kHz or 96kHz via a mic pre such as Scarlett OctoPre or Scarlett OctoPre Dynamic, or four channels at 192kHz. That’s more than enough channels to mic up the whole band and route a full mix to a console or summing box.
This article will detail how to get set up with a Scarlett interface in order to record vocals with a microphone in a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation - your recording software) on both Mac and Windows. You can either follow the step by step instructions below, or watch the following video guides instead.
1) Scarlett Solo, 2i2 and 2i4 customers - If using a Windows PC, ensure that the USB driver has been installed. You can obtain this driver by selecting your product from the section of our site or by clicking 'Downloads and Activation Codes' under your product after . Mac customers do not need to install a driver with these interfaces.
Scarlett 6i6, 18i8 and 18i20 customers - Please install Focusrite Control (Mac and Windows). You can obtain Focusrite Control by selecting your product from the section of our site or by clicking 'Downloads and Activation Codes' under your product after . If you've never opened Focusrite Control before, please do this at least once in case your unit needs a firmware update (you'll be prompted to do this if it's needed).
3) Connect your microphone using an XLR cable to an available XLR input on your Scarlett. If using a condenser microphone (such as the CM25 included in Scarlett Solo Studio and Scarlett 2i2 Studio packs) also press the 48V phantom power button (if you're unsure whether you have a condenser microphone then please check with the microphone manufacturer).
4) Open the software that you wish to record with. The 2nd Generation Scarletts come with both Ableton Live Lite and Pro Tools First which are available from your account after registering, though you can use other recording software if you wish to. Please see for instructions on how to register your product. We have a separate video which details .
7) Set the input of the new track to match the input that you've connected your microphone to on your Scarlett (e.g. if you've connected to the leftmost input on the front of the Scarlett, select Input 1).
9) Adjust the gain on your interface. To do this, sing/speak into your microphone at the volume you'll be performing at, then turn the gain dial until the gain halo stays green while you're talking (but not so high that it goes red). In the DAW, it's good practice to aim for a level that peaks at around -10dB. It's not uncommon to have to set the gain relatively high when using particular microphones, please see .
Decades of analogue circuit design experience, applied around 24-bit/192kHz A-D and D-A conversion, delivers a superior signal path. In addition, the Air-enabled mic preamps can reproduce the input impedance, clarity and frequency response curve of our original ISA mic preamp.
This compatibility applies to Windows 1903, please see the articles linked at the very bottom of this article for earlier specific Windows 10 versions. Please see below a run-down of Focusrite product compatibility with Windows 10 as it currently stands. We would strongly recommend checking that your computer/motherboard is supported on Windows 10 by the manufacturer before updating and installing any relevant BIOS/chipset updates as required (please contact the manufacturer for assistance with this).
Please check that all other software/hardware you use to make music is also compatible before updating and never update your operating system during the middle of a time-critical project. If you're using additional software that came bundled with your Focusrite interface (e.g. Ableton Live Lite, Pro Tools First) then please check the corresponding manufacturer's website for compatibility information.
The USB 1.1 version of the Saffire 6 USB is not officially supported with Windows 10 1903, though it may work. Please note that Saffire 6 USB 1.1 is no longer part of our development or test plans, see this article:
Saffire 6 USB 2.0: YESYou can determine whether you have a Saffire 6 USB 1.1 or Saffire 6 USB 2.0 by checking the serial number on the sticker on the underside of the unit. If the serial number begins with 'SU', it's a Saffire 6 USB 1.1. If it begins with 'S2', it's a Saffire 6 USB 2.0.
